Published article on River Baseflow in collaboration with the Government of Malawi

Laura Kelly, a third year PhD student funded through the Climate Justice Fund Water Futures Programme, has published her first journal paper. It is currently available open access online. The paper is part of a special issue on ‘Groundwater-surface water interactions’ published in Water. The full paper can be downloaded from this link.

The paper, titled ‘Quantification of Temporal Variations in Base Flow Index Using Sporadic River Data: Application to the Bua Catchment, Malawi’, demonstrates how to work with sporadic river data to produce meaningful estimates on variations in river baseflow. The paper is co-authored by Prof. Robert Kalin (Director, Climate Justice Fund Water Futures Programme, and Professor of Environmental Engineering for Sustainability) and Dr. Doug Bertram (Associate Director: Engineering Online Centre & Senior Knowledge Exchange Fellow) at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside Dr. Modesta Kanjaye (Director of Water Resources Department), Mr MacPherson Nkhata (Chief Hydrogeological Officer) and Mr Hyde Sibande (Deputy Director Surface Water Department) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development for the Government of Malawi.

This is the first of a series of planned papers for Laura’s PhD. It is hoped that her research will assist Malawi to better understand and manage their water resources.
