Water infrastructure investment greatly reduced the distance women must travel foor water and provides more time to women for personal well being, and community and family activities.
The Dublin Principals recognized the connection and impact of Water Resources and Women. Low Water Point functionality has a negative impact on Women who often travel great distance to obtain water.
GIS mapping of water point functionality 'Need' against the distance to water in 2011 provided a metric for investment that resulted in a positive impact, returning time and well being to Women.
GENDER IMPACT ANALYSIS
Properly guided Water Resource Investment underpins the Dublin Principals
Dublin Principal 3: The role of women as providers and users of water and guardians of the living environment has seldom been reflected in institutional arrangements for the development and management of water resources. Acceptance and implementation of this principle requires positive policies to address women's specific needs.....
This project specifically aimed to evaluated the net impacts of activities on the health and well being of women.
SCROLL TO SEE REDUCED DISTANCE TRAVELED TO GET WATER BETWEEN 2011 & 2014 DUE TO NEW WATERPOINTS
Quantification of Gender Impact
Water point mapping was used to calculate the distance women were travelling on average to get water. The time savings (in 1,000's of hours per month per village) and estimates of economic benefits of WASH investment were calculated between 2011 and 2014, and through community engagement the positive impacts on Women were studied.
Water Point Investment Provides for Healthy Communities and Personal Well Being
Community Engagement found that much of the time regained through water point investment was mainly refocused on family, community and personal health and well being.
Evaluation of the impact of water point functionality within GIS was used to calculate the mean distance to the closest functional Water Point in 2011 and 2014
Investment planning decision making is most effective when multiple risk targets are combined and the net benefit in time and impact on health and well being can be quantified.
