Groundwater Drilling is for the most part unsupervised by trained Hydrogeologists, this leads to a wide spread problem of poor design and implementation of borehole infrastructure. 


Groundwater resources are impacted by Salinity resulting in a  high rate of non-usable boreholes.  Hydrogeologic knowledge is needed to ensure proper engineering of borehole infrastructure.

Borehole functionality has declined

during the period from 2011 to 2014:

In the rush to meet the MGD's boreholes are being installed at an accelerated rate. The lack of hydrogeological understanding and capacity throughout Rural Africa means that much of this infrastructure is being installed without a proper design process, resulting in poor borehole functionality. NGOs and Donors need to invest in proper Hydrogeology Capacity Building, and use only skilled hydrogeologists for design and oversight.

A local material (termite mound clay) is substituted for Bentonite to ensure proper Borehole Construction

The CJF project worked closely with the Malawi Government to identify hydrogeological needs

Groundwater supplies in the Mwanza River Basin are plagued by salinity and poor functionality.  Thus, few NGO's and Donors undertook to invest in these high risk areas.

Borehole design and construction requires significant capacity building investment in Malawi.  The lack of trained Hydrogeologists and hydrogeological technicians results in poor design decisions.   The lack of Bentonite (expensive commercial clay) was easily solved by using Termite Mound Clay resulting in fresh water boreholes.

Climate Justice Project hydrogeologists worked alongside Malawi Gov't drillers to closely monitor hydrogeological parameters and prepare proper drilling logs that identified the sources of salinity and other contaminants during installation.  This allowed for on-site knowledge-led installation design as per standard international Hydrogeological practice.
